After guiding fighters to victories over quality names such as Leo Santa Cruz and Chris Eubank Jr, Shane McGuigan says that Liam Smith will go into that category if he can prepare Anthony Fowler for victory.
The super-welterweight pair came face to face for the first time at a congested press conference in Liverpool ahead of their October 9th battle. The fight, exclusively live on DAZN, has caught the imagination of fight fans but McGuigan, Fowler’s trainer for his last four fights, is well aware of how hard a task is in front of his man.
“Liam is a great fighter and he’s done a lot,” said McGuigan when speaking to DAZN. “It’s a huge ask for us to take this fight but I wouldn’t be taking it if I didn’t believe Fowler could beat him. I genuinely believe that even if it’s the best Liam Smith, I still think we can work on something to beat him.
“We’re the underdogs. It’s like [George] Groves vs. Eubank when people were picking Eubank. I see it as one of my biggest tests as a trainer. I see how he deals with the questions that get asked of him in the gym and I believe on fight night he’s going to have too much for him.”
