Sergio Mora believes that Devin Haney deserves a shot against George Kambosos Jr. despite Gervonta Davis also winning this weekend.
Devin Haney secured a successful defence of his WBC strap against JoJo Diaz on Sunday, with Tank following that up on Sunday with a win over Isaac Cruz.
Davis is the WBA regular champion, but Haney’s WBC is the better regarded belt, and there is a desire to settle any dispute over Kambosos’ own WBC ‘franchise’ title, and the potential title of undisputed champion at 135lbs.
Speaking on JABS as part of the DAZN Boxing Show, Mora explained his choice.
“I’ve got to go with Devin Haney, because Haney beat a hungry former champion, and Tank Davis beat an unknown contender and struggled. Isaac Cruz was a hell of a fight, and was in the fight until the end. It was a close fight, I think Cruz did enough bodywork and backed up Tank,” he began.
Either way Devin Haney deserves the fight with Kambossos, but I wouldn’t be mad if Tank gets it.
“[Haney] wants all the smoke, all the big dogs. The fact that he’s coming off the back of former champions, he’s vulnerable, but he’s still calling them out.”
Pundit Chris Mannix agreed, and thinks that only Haney really wants the fight.
“Frankly, I think Devin Haney is the only one who wants it,” he stated. “He was clear that he wanted that unification fight against Kambosos, and wants to settle once and for all who is undisputed at 135lbs. The fight against JoJo Diaz wasn’t perfect, he looked buzzed at times. But he pulled out a win and immediately called out George Kambosos afterwards. Tank seems almost disinterested, he was asked and didn’t seem all that enthused. I thought Haney fought better and is the only one who wants it.”
