Gervonta 'Tank' Davis returns to action next month when he takes on Rolando Romero, but while Davis generates much excitement amongst fans, he is yet to have a career defining fight.
This has led to Davis expressing frustration towards Mayweather Promotions and rumours of the two parting company.
When discussing the future of Davis on JABS, Sergio Mora can see a lot of parallels between Davis and his promoter Floyd Mayweather Jr.
"He’s following the same footsteps as his mentor and current promoter Floyd Mayweather Jr," Mora said.
"Mayweather back in the day bought himself out of the contract with Top Rank for $750,000. From there he didn’t look back, millions and millions, hundreds of millions of dollars later, it’s a great decision, one of the best business decisions in boxing.
"Tank Davis is doing the exact same thing, he’s just branching out into greatness, he’s becoming an attraction, a PPV star, and there’s a lot of money to be made and if he can keep that pie from being sliced up in too many directions, he gets more slices of the pie, it makes perfect sense.
"I love the things that Tank is doing, expect Tank Promotions soon."
Chris Mannix had plenty of praise for Mayweather Promotions when it came to building Davis into a star inside the ring.
"First I want to say I think Mayweather Promotions has done an outstanding job building Tank into an attraction," Mannix began.
"There are very few fighters in the U.S. that are as popular as Tank Davis who has proven he can do real gates in Baltimore, Atlanta, Los Angeles, his next fight’s up in New York it’s probably going to do really well.
"He has been built nicely as an attraction, but Mayweather Promotions has not shown the urgency that they need to make the big fights.
"Tank is going to be 28-years-old in the fall and his biggest win to date is against Jose Pedraza, and we have heard Floyd Mayweather say on the record that he’s not looking to do deals with other promoters which severely limits the options for Tank Davis."
If Davis does get past Romero, Mannix believes there is only one fight to make next against one of the biggest names in world boxing.
"If Mayweather Promotions still wants to be involved with Tank Davis, great, they know him, they know how to build him, but Tank Davis needs to make it clear that there is one fight he wants after Rolando Romero, and that’s Ryan Garcia.
"The Ryan Garcia fight is set-up as well as it’s going to be set-up.
"Ryan fights in April on a return date, Tank fights Romero in May, these two should meet in the late Summer or early Fall.
"I don’t know if he needs a change from Mayweather, but he has to tell them ‘If you want to work with me, you make sure you get a deal done for me to face Ryan Garcia.’"
