SugarHill Steward: The man guiding Tyson Fury towards revenge in Riyadh

SugarHill Steward: The man guiding Tyson Fury towards revenge in RiyadhDAZN

They say it takes a village to raise a child - and in the ring, it takes a city to change a fighter's destiny.

Tyson Fury knows this more than most. Plenty of boxers have famous entourages, but the former heavyweight world champion isn't exactly short on big personalities in his corner.

Born into boxing lineage, the Gypsy King's extended family have been with him through thick and thin - but one man stands out from the crowd around him as pivotal to his story.

SugarHill Steward, formerly known as Javan "Sugar" Hill, hails a world away from the Morecambe Bay base of the star, but the Detroit-born trainer remains his greatest ace.

As Fury prepares to face Oleksandr Usyk in their rematch at Riyadh Season's Reignited, live on DAZN Pay-Per-View, DAZN News profiles just what the American means in his story.

Who is SugarHill Steward?

The nephew of the legendary Detroit trainer Emanuel Steward, for whom he would change his name to honour in 2019, Steward was born Javan Hill in 1975 in the Michigan city.

He grew up around boxing, and worked at his uncle's iconic Kronk Gym, presumably rubbing shoulders with greats such as Lennox Lewis and Wladimir Klitschko over the years.

He first met Fury in 2010, when the latter trained in the city as he slowly rose through the ranks. Though their relationship was yet to form as the Briton was guided by his family.

The elder Steward did sit in with Fury for one fight - his 2010 win over Zack Page - before he passed in 2012. But the family connection would be reignited seven years later.

What is SugarHill Steward's bond with Tyson Fury?

Having climbed to the top of the world with victory over Klitschko, before bottoming out amid a prolonged period of substance issues and depression, Fury returned to the big time.

The fight was with Deontay Wilder, and despite a knockdown that left him sparked on the canvas, the Gypsy King rose to earn a famous draw, setting the stage for a rematch.

But Fury did not want to go the distance the second time around - he wanted the knockout. For that, there was only one man he could turn to in his mind - SugarHill Steward.

“The only reason I’m with SugarHill is because I need a knockout in this fight," he told The Telegraph. “If I was looking to nick a points win, I’d have stuck with Ben [Davison].”

The choice paid off - Fury dropped Wilder in the third round and then the fifth, and likely would have sent him sprawling in the seventh if the towel had not been thrown in.

The victory solidified Steward's bond, emulating the work of his uncle as a vintage heavyweight trainer - and he has coaxed Fury through thick and thin ever since then.

How can SugarHill Steward help Tyson Fury beat Oleksandr Usyk?

Tyson Fury corner

Plenty of defining images were beamed out of Riyadh to the world when Fury and Usyk first met, but perhaps the most telling mid-fight was the confusion in the former's corner.

Steward and Andy Lee are seen trying to coax the star back onto the front foot after he was rocked by his foe, but their instructions appear to be countered by Fury's father John.

The latter already caused controversy when he headbutted a member of Usyk's entourage in the build-up to the fight, and his antics have been counterintuitive over the years.

Frank Warren has given assurances the elder Fury will not be in the corner for this rematch, though it remains to be seen if he will be held at his word come crunch time in Riyadh.

But if distractions can be eliminated, Steward will have his man firmly focused on his instructions - and he knows now how best to unleash the caged rage inside his superstar.
