Sunny Edwards believes his bout with Galal Yafai could be the first of several professional fights between the pair, as they prepare to meet live on DAZN this weekend.
The former IBF flyweight title holder meets the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games champion at bp pulse LIVE in Birmingham, with the interim WBC title at stake for the pair.
With just an 8-0 professional record, there have been questions whether this clash has come too quickly for Yafai against a more experienced opponent with a 21-1 card.
Speaking on DAZN's FACE OFF before their clash however, Edwards rubbished any notion and insisted his former sparring partner is more than ready to face him for real.
"I don't think [it is too soon] at all," he said. "He’s had a tremendous amateur career – he [won] the Olympics, he [has] the real whole shebang. I think it’s perfect timing for us.
"Galal is three years older than me so he needs to get going a bit more. We’re going to be here for a few more years but why not get a crack in now?
"I genuinely think it is going to be one of the best fights to watch. There probably aren’t too many others around our names in age and weight in the country.
"So we’re probably going to see each other again maybe a couple of times. I’m glad they’ve taken the fight. From my side, it’s always been clear.
"Whenever that fight was ready for me, I’ll always be ready for it. I’m excited for it. Usually I have to work in America to get the good fights. To have it here in the UK, it’s great."
