Sunny Edwards enjoyed an easy unanimous victory over former junior flyweight champion Adrian Curiel on Saturday night.
The pair were fighting at flyweight on the Estrada vs. Rodriguez card, and the doctor stopped the clash in the ninth round as Edwards had suffered a cut that was unable to be staunched after an early, accidental headbutt.
That saw the fight go to the judges, who scored it 90-82, 88-84, 87-85 in the Briton’s favour.
That early stoppage did not go down with the home fans, and speaking after the fight, Edwards protested he did not want to stop fighting.
“I don’t know if the crowd realises what happened, but I had nothing to do with this. The referee stopped the fight. I’m more upset than any of the 10,000 fans,” he said. “I thought I was going to get him out of here.”
Edwards put on an impressive display over the course of the nine rounds, and he shifted his thoughts to becoming champion once more.
“I’m ready. I’m the biggest name in the division,” he added.
