Richard Torrez Jr. could finaly end Team USA's gold medal drought at the Olympics following his win over Kazakhstan's Kamshybek Kunkabayev in the men's super-heavyweight final.
Kunkabayev's skills and experience gave Torrez some trouble early on, but the American rocked his opponent in the first round and sent Kunkabayev to the canvas just before the bell in the second.
Torrez then opened a big cut on the Kazakh's nose in the third round cuasing the referee to stop the fight.
Speaking after his win, Torrez had plenty of respect for his opponent, but now has his eyes set on becoming the first American since Riddick Bowe in 1998 to win gold in the super-heavyweight division.
"I hope my opponent's alright, I hope he’s doing good. I saw him walk out of the ring, so much love to him." Torrez said.
“I’m just going to keep doing all I can to be on that gold medal podium. I’m going to do all I can to be able to go back home to say, ‘dad, we did it',"
Meanwhile, Team USA teammate Oshae Jones claimed bronze in the women's welterweight competition after losing to China's Gu Hong in the semi-finals.
Jones was corageous throughout the contest, but always looked one step behind her opponent.
Gu's movement and superior reach managed to keep Jones at bay, and her dominance was evident on the scorecards with four of the five judges scoring the bout in the 32-year-old's favour.
