Legendary boxing trainer and analyst Teddy Atlas believes undisputed super middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez needs to face one particular opponent if he is to be labelled one of Mexico's greatest ever fighters.
With a career spanning over 18 years and multiple world titles, Alvarez has already cemented himself as one of boxing's greatest ever fighters, but with Mexico being a country which has a huge passion for the sport, their fighters have to do extraordinary things to be considered one of the greats.
Alvarez has fought the likes of Floyd Mayweather and Gennadiy Golovkin during his time in the ring, there is one name however which continues to follow him, David Benavidez.
Benavidez continued to keep the super middleweight division on notice this past weekend with a stoppage win over Demetrius Andrade and now the clamour for a fight with Alvarez is bigger than ever.
However, the reigning undisputed 168lb champion has shown little interest and now Atlas has stated that Alvarez can no longer avoid Benavidez if wants to continue adding to his legacy.
“If Canelo is gonna be called one of the greatest Mexicans and the top 168 pounder and accept those accolades, then he has to fight Benavidez,” Atlas said on The Fight with Teddy Atlas YouTube channel.
“He has to fight Benavidez to justify that. He has to.”
