The former unified lightweight champion is ready to step up.

Teofimo Lopez has claimed he will become the undisputed champion at 140lbs.

Lopez made the vow on Twitter, writing: “I will become UNDISPUTED again but at Junior Welterweight! #TheTakeover”.

The American fighter was the unified - and some would argue undisputed - champion at lightweight until he came up against George Kambosos Jr. last November. The Australian sprung a huge surprise to win, but Lopez’s father said he had made an error in holding back his son to keep fighting at 135lbs.

The pair had previously suggested they could move up to 140lbs before as they sought high profile match-ups, and now it seems Lopez Jr. is ready to move up in pursuit of a new four belts.

If Lopez wants to get back to winning titles in quick time then he will need to arrange a fight with current undisputed champion Josh Taylor who faces Jack Catterall on February 26th in a WBO mandatory defence in Glasgow.

For his part, Taylor has suggested he is ready to move to 147lbs in his next fight, with a fight against Terence Crawford or other title holders suggested by the Scot, though he may be persuaded to remain at super lightweight if he can secure a money-spinning fight with Lopez.
