Terence Crawford is one of nine male boxers who have reached undisputed glory in the modern four-belt era dating back to 2004.
"Bud" accomplished the feat in August 2017 at junior welterweight. If he's able to defeat Errol Spence Jr. in their welterweight clash on Saturday night, he'll become the first man to don the undisputed crown in two different weight classes. (Claressa Shields became the first boxer to ever achieve the feat back in 2021).
So, what would back-to-back undisputed world championships mean to the 35-year-old Crawford?
"It's going to be even sweeter to win the undisputed championship for the second time,” said Crawford as part of the grand arrivals in Las Vegas ceremony on Tuesday, as reported by Premier Boxing Champions.
“That's why we take the chances we take. That's why we fight the way we fight. This is a fight that the world's been craving."
The fact Spence-Crawford once resembled a mere pipe dream, with both sides hitting repeated snags in negotiations — or lack thereof — make the cementing of this fight all the more special.
Crawford (39-0, 30 knockouts) further believes that defeating Spence, and doing so convincingly, will leave no stones unturned for him at 147 pounds when it comes to boxing history.
"My name is already up there with the all-time greatest welterweight fighters," he said.
"It's just a matter of going out there on Saturday and putting the cherry on top and furthering my legacy."
