Week 2 of Matchroom Boxing’s Fight Camp begins on Friday from the backyard of the company’s office in Brentwood, Essex, England. The main event is a WBC and IBO Super-Featherweight Championship bout between Terri Harper and Natasha Jonas.
It’s only the second Matchroom Boxing event since the restart of competitive boxing after the recent COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. Fans are still not able to attend sporting events, but it promises to be an exhilarating match-up, says Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn.
“People like Katie Taylor have pushed the boundaries but without people like Natasha Jonas, Terri Harper, then there's nothing to follow those doors being opened,” Hearn said in a pre-match press conference.
"This is a major moment because this is a big domestic fight. There isn't the parity with but we have come a long way with world title fights and what people are earning at the top end. When people can see a future it is better for the sport.”
Harper (10-0, 5 KOs) has not featured since the start of February 2020, when she defeated Finnish veteran Eva Wahlstrom at Sheffield Arena for the WBC and IBO Super Featherweight titles. The 23-year-old Briton has been boxing professionally for just three years and remains undefeated since her 2017 debut.
Harper told the Sunday Telegraph of her ambitions in her weight class, saying: “For me, I’m down at super featherweight and I’m fully focused on this division.
"There are some great names and champions for me to beat. The goal is to unify and become undisputed and that’s when we will definitely be moving up weight. I do believe I can move up a couple of weights.”
Jonas also made her professional debut in 2017, but at 36 the southpaw is 13 years Harper's senior. Over 10 fights she has seven knockouts to her name, but her pristine record was spoiled in 2018 against Vivian Obenauf in Cardiff when she lost her WBA Super Feather title.
Jonas is counting on her extra years to give her an edge, saying of her opponent: “She’s young, she’s hungry and she’s proved she can do 10 rounds.
“She’s fit, but I also think that some of those things can be your undoing when you’re young. Sometimes you’re a bit naive, you can be a bit overeager when you’re hungry. She’s been talking about stopping the fight early so we’ll see.”
