David Benavidez is laser-focused on snatching David Morrell’s WBA “Regular” light heavyweight world title on February 1, before facing the winner of a possible Artur Beterbiev-Dmitry Bivol rematch for the division’s undisputed crown.
But during recent chat with DAZN News, the WBC interim light heavyweight world champion named an enticing fight that he would be willing to step outside of the division to make — a showdown with unified WBA/WBO cruiserweight world champion Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez.
“That is definitely a fight that we’re eyeing and if we could get that fight tomorrow, we’d go and fight that fight tomorrow, too,” Benavidez said with his fingers interlocked in meaning business, while flashing a grin.
“I know ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez real well and I’m actually really proud of him, too, because he’s the unified champion at 200 pounds. He won two titles, he’s accomplished a lot. I’ve known him for a long, long time, so it makes me really proud to be his friend and work with him.”
Such a clash would have the undefeated Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) moving up from 175 pounds to 200 pounds and challenging Ramirez (47-1, 30 KOs) who is fresh off of defeating Chris Billam-Smith in a banger via unanimous decision earlier this month. Interestingly enough, a loss to Bivol is the only blemish on the 33-year-old Ramirez’s pro ledger.
Benavidez, 27, feels like such an opportunity would be too tempting to pass up … even if it means disrupting his course at light heavyweight.
“So I feel like, at the end of the day, this could possibly be one of the biggest fights in cruiserweight history,” Benavidez told DAZN News about clashing with Ramirez. “You know, two Mexicans going at it. It’d definitely be a great fight.
“That fight, I feel is definitely a great fight for me and my team,” he continued stating. “I’m moving little by little, but like I said, if the opportunity is presented to me then I’m not going to turn it down.”
Until it does, the most immediate mission at hand remains unfazed: getting past Morrell toward achieving undisputed world championship status at light heavyweight.
“I know I’m going to do that,” Benavidez said about defeating an 11-0 (9 KOs) Morrell, “and then I’m going after all four belts.”
