Tim Tszyu has one week to get ready for a new opponent as Michael Zerafa pulls out following COVID-19 worries.

Tim Tszyu is set to face Steve Spark on July 7th following the withdrawal of Michael Zerafa.

The latter had been set to challenge Tszyu in what would be been a major event for Australian boxing but Covid-19 concerns have forced the former Kell Brook opponent to pull out.

Spark, who registered a career best win over Jack Brubaker in April, was already working hard in the gym as he had a scheduled fight on July 24th.

The chance to halt Tszyu’s relentless momentum was an opportunity to turn down and he’ll be hoping to gate-crash the world rankings with an upset victory.

“We knew from the moment he looked Tim in the eyes at the press conference and went quiet that he never wanted this fight,” said George, the CEO of No Limit Boxing who are staging the event, on Zerafa’s refusal to fight.

“I knew it. Tim knew it. Australia knew it. He never wanted this fight and all I can say is I’m sorry for everyone who has wanted this fight for so long.”

On the change of opponent, Tszyu, the son of former 140lbs ruler, Kostya, had nothing but praise for his new foe. ““Credit to Steve for taking this fight,” said Tszyu.

“He’s a dangerous fighter with a lot of power. I’ve seen it for myself. I was ringside at the fight in Wollongong when he hammered Jack Brubaker, and saw how well he did under the bright lights.

“He has power, stamina and keeps the pressure on. I know he’s coming to hit and hit hard. I’m expecting that and much more next Wednesday night. It’s going to be a great fight.”
