Trevor McCumby felt Caleb Plant adjusted well to his knockdown in their bout, after he suffered the first loss of his professional career in Las Vegas.
Plant was floored in the early stages by his opponent before ultimately rising from the canvas to deliver a ninth-round victory.
The result, which came on the undercard of Canelo Alvarez's win over Edgar Berlanga, saw McCumby on the wrong end of a fifth-round barrage that badly hurt his chances.
Reflecting on the loss, in particular the spell when Plant pinned him with 32 body shots, the super middleweight contender acknowledged he did not land the shots he wanted.
"I noticed that he wanted to fight more on the inside," said McCumby. "When I was sparring I had caught a lot of guys with left hooks while I was back on the ropes.
"It was one of my better shots. I was trying to catch him but I couldn't get him clean enough. He adjusted well."
