Devin Haney believes boxers are protective of their unbeaten records in this current era and he’s blamed Floyd Mayweather for fighters having such a mindset.
Haney, an unbeaten fighter himself, has earned his undisputed title status at 135lbs with a win over George Kambosos and he maintained his impressive run earlier this year with a narrow win over Vasiliy Lomachenko.
With his next move still unknown, Haney will have plenty of options when the time comes to fight again with a number of boxing’s big names currently competing in or around his weight class.
Despite having numerous directions he can potentially head in, actually securing the fight will be the problem as Haney believes bouts would be easier to make if fighters stopped caring about losses so much.
“We could change the whole dynamic of boxing and make it like the UFC,” said Haney when appearing on the Pivot Podcast. “Those guys fight each other, lose, fight again in maybe even bigger fights after a loss.
“Floyd made boxing bigger, but he kind of messed up the game with the undefeated record so guys don’t wanna fight each other, they just wanna keep the 0.”
