Vergil Ortiz Jr is making big strides in the welterweight division

Vergil Ortiz Jr will return to the ring on August 14th when he takes on the biggest test of his career in Egidijus Kavaliauskas exclusively live on DAZN.

The contest will take place in Ortiz’ home state of Texas at the Ford Center in Frisco and the Golden Boy contender will be aiming to send out a message to the 147lbs division.

Ortiz’ last performance, a destructive seventh round stoppage of Maurice Hooker in March, impressed onlookers as he climbed the rankings towards the biggest names at welterweight including Errol Spence and Terence Crawford.

The latter holds a win over Kavaliauskas but the Lithuanian puncher had his moments in the fight, which was eventually decided by the Nebraska star in the ninth session. Ortiz has the perfect measuring stick to demonstrate that he belongs in the ring against the sport’s leading names.

“I always said I’m here to take on the toughest challenges to prove myself,” said Vergil Ortiz Jr. “Egis is a very game, strong opponent, and a win over him would leave no doubts that I’m ready for a world title fight immediately. It won’t be easy, but that’s the point. The fans are going to enjoy this one.”

Oscar De La Hoya, Ortiz’ promoter, added, “Vergil Ortiz Jr. is developing the most impressive resume for any boxer his age.”

“Though the welterweight division is perhaps the most competitive weight class in the sport, Ortiz Jr. has been able to maintain a knockout ratio of 100% in his big tests against Antonio Orozco, Brad Solomon and Maurice Hooker.

“On August 14, Ortiz Jr. will look better than ever and remind everyone why he is the biggest threat at 147 pounds.”
