Virgil Hunter has heaped huge praise on Joshua Buatsi.
The veteran Californian coach has cornered many high-quality talents including Andre Ward, Amir Khan and Andre Berto, but with the exception of Ward, a two-weight world champion, Hunter insists that Buatsi is the second-best fighter he’s worked with, just behind the Oakland star.
Since joining Hunter in 2021, Buatsi has maintained his impressive rise up the ratings and he currently stands on the verge of obtaining a world title fight with WBA ruler, Dmitry Bivol.
Back in May, Buatsi scored the biggest win of his career when outpointing London rival, Craig Richards, and Hunter has been impressed with what he’s seen so far.
“There are no issues with him,” said Hunter when speaking to BoxingScene.
“Fighters that have a lot of issues I don’t like them. He has no issues. He has straight dedication, determination. He’s a good kid, he’s a solid man. That speaks volumes for him. That’s why I enjoy having him and that’s why I want the best for him.”
“I think at this point he’s the second-best fighter I’ve had. I’ve had some good fighters. Like Amir, but they weren’t dedicated like Josh. So, I have him second on the list behind Andre. Everybody else I trained, good fighters, but [there are] always issues.”
