WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman believes that Dillian Whyte is likely to move straight to a fight with Tyson Fury after missing out on his scheduled fight with Otto Wallin.
The Swedish heavyweight was due to fight the 32-year-old Briton on October 30 but Whyte suffered a shoulder injury which prevented him from defending his WBC interim championship.
That title puts him in line to face Fury but he has been kept at bay as Fury has faced Deontay Wilder three times and is likely to want to meet Oleksandr Usyk for the chance to become the undisputed world heavyweight champion, assuming Anthony Joshua does not win their 2022 rematch.
Speaking to talkSPORT, Sulaiman explained that the WBC will give Fury and Usyk the chance to organise a unification clash, but otherwise they would look to make a Fury-Whyte fight.
“The WBC order was very clear, that the winner of Fury vs. Wilder has one month to try to secure the ultimate unification against Usyk, who defeated Joshua,” he said.
“If they’re not capable of doing such, then the WBC would go with a mandatory, which is the interim champion.
“We have received from the British Boxing Board of Control the medical certification that Whyte could not fight Wallin because of the injury.
“So we are going to do what we promised, which is that way we are moving forward.”
