Without defeat in his nine professional fights, Sol Dacres puts his English Heavyweight title on the line again on Saturday when he faces David Adeleye at Wembley Arena.
What should we expect when the man known as ‘The Real Deal’ - all six-foot, five inches of him - steps into the ring for his second title defence of the year? Here's a closer look at this rising heavyweight star.
From rugby boots to boxing gloves
Solomon Dacres didn’t begin his athletic career in the boxing ring. A talented rugby player during his school days, Dacres initially pursued a future on the field. He was part of the Worcester Warriors academy and played semi-professionally at National League level. However, his passion for combat sports ultimately drew him to boxing, where his combination of power and agility translated seamlessly into the ring.
A strong amateur pedigree
Before turning pro, Dacres made waves as an amateur. Representing Team GB, he won multiple national titles and gained international experience that prepared him for the professional ranks. He was hopeful of attending the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, but it was Frazer Clarke who was ultimately selected for the team's super-heavyweight spot. It was then that he turned professional as he was snapped up to fight with Matchroom.
Anthony Joshua’s big influence
Dacres is guided by renowned trainer Robert McCracken, who also mentored heavyweight superstar Anthony Joshua. McCracken’s influence has been pivotal in refining Dacres’ technique and developing his strategic approach to fights, allowing him to maximize his natural physical attributes.
The proximity to and the opportunity to work with Joshua has also been a major bonus.
Commenting on Joshua's role in his development, Dacres told The Standard in 2021: “Joshua was training up in Sheffield with us for the last few years, it puts it into perspective and makes it more real. When you look at a Klitschko or an American champion, they’re always somewhere else. Now, though, he’s done it from where we are – the same place – so that makes it more of a reality, makes you realise if you work hard you can get to within touching distance of that.”
A relentless work rate
Despite standing at 6’5” and weighing in at around 108kg, Dacres doesn’t just rely on size and power. He’s known for his exceptional work rate and his ability to keep opponents on the back foot. His relentless pressure often overwhelms rivals, making him a dangerous contender in any bout.
Aiming for big things
At 31 years of age, Dacres has made it clear that he doesn’t just want to dominate the domestic scene. With the English Heavyweight title already his, he has his sights set on European and world honours. Saturday’s fight against David Adeleye is another step on his path toward the global stage.
Sol Dacres’ nickname, ‘The Real Deal’, isn’t just for show — it’s a testament to his potential to shake up the heavyweight division. With his combination of size, skill, and determination, he’s one to watch in the boxing world. Will he retain his title on Saturday? Fans will be eagerly tuning in to find out.
