The DAZN Boxing Show looked through the options for Ryan Garcia’s interim fight ahead of an expected clash with Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis.
The unbeaten American is expected to fight Tank in April 2023 but first of all, Davis is going to take on Hector Garcia.
That opens up a window for Garcia to sharpen up against his own choice of opponent, with the difficulty being that the former interim WBC champion will not want to duck a similarly tough opponent as Tank will face, but not wanting to risk a loss of momentum since his comeback after surgery and a mental health sabbatical.
Discussing the conundrum, Akin ‘Ak’ Reyes said: “That’s going to put some pressure on who Ryan Garcia fights in between. I’m not saying he has to go and grab an undefeated fighter, but someone people respect to some degree. Someone at least as good as [Javier] Fortuna or even better, to match that bar.
“Let’s keep this momentum going. People are probably booking flights to Vegas already!”
Barak Bess suggested: “Maybe Isaac Cruz, maybe JoJo Diaz.”
Ak replied: “Of course Isaac Cruz is a great measuring stick given Gervonta Davis went the distance with him. That’s probably more dangerous than Hector Garcia. I believe Ryan Garcia fighting Isaac Cruz is more dangerous, but who knows? Boxing is about styles.
“Maybe JoJo Diaz.”
Bess added three more names to the shortlist, saying: “Maybe [William] Zepeda, George Kambosos Jr., maybe Frank Martin.”
