Zhilei Zhang failed to build on the momentum of last year as he began 2024 with a loss to Joseph Parker in Saudi Arabia.
The Chinese star has a chance to rebuild this summer when he faces Deontay Wiler on June 1, and he has admitted that he did not treat Parker as a serious threat.
Defeat to Wilder next month could signal the end for Zhang at the business end of the heavyweight division and he is aiming to not make the same mistake against the American.
Victory for Zhang could open the door for world title shot in the near future and he is hoping to get his plans right.
“I made a big mistake underestimating Parker. I had to admit it happened. At the same time, I learned a lot from that fight,” said Zhang when speaking to the Queensberry Promotions YouTube channel.
“We came back, we analysed every little detail, and we corrected our mistakes. I believe the next fight, it’s gonna be a new me.”
