Amanda Nunes explains why she won't make title shot at UFC's May 9 event

Amanda Nunes explains why she won't make title shot at UFC's May 9 eventDAZN
The timing just isn't right for the UFC women's double champion to step into the Octagon.

The UFC announced Monday that its UFC event on May 9 won't be held in Sao Paulo as originally planned. Dana White has yet to name a new location for the massive card that he's reportedly building, either.

But whether the UFC president can pull it off amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic or not, Amanda Nunes won't be involved. During an interview with CBS Sports on Monday, the two-division world champ cited a lack of prep time as the reason why she won't be defending her featherweight title against Felicia Spencer on May 9.

"Actually, I'm not fighting May 9," Nunes told CBS Sports. "I'm going to fight, (but) I don't know yet. I don't think this is the right time for me right now to fight. Let this coronavirus pass a little bit, so I can at least have a full camp. We can maybe see around June, (but) let's see what is going to happen. But I'm not fighting (May 9)."

Spencer was told by the UFC to be ready for June and won't remain on the May 9 card, either, ESPN reported.

In the meantime, Nunes told CBS Sports that she has been allowed to train at the American Top Team gym in Coconut Creek, Fla., daily, while adhering to social distancing rules as well.

"The gym opened just for people that has fights coming up," Nunes said. "It's not many people, just me and a couple guys that are going to be on the same card as me. We all have separate training with just me and my coach, one on one.  I keep in shape like that. I go to the gym only one time in the morning and do everything. I do a couple of things by myself and some things that I need a coach. Then I come home and I really do everything I need to keep in shape. I have a treadmill and some weights."

The UFC women's featherweight and bantamweight double champ has solidified herself as the greatest women's MMA fighter of all time, currently on a 10-fight winning streak, which included a first-round TKO of Holly Holm last July and a unanimous decision over Germaine de Randamie in December.

Spencer is 8-1, having rebounded from a loss to Cris Cyborg in July with a first-round TKO of Zarah Fairn Dos Santos in February.
