A lot of pressure was on the shoulders of Simeon Powell ahead of last Saturday's inaugral PFL Europe event.
At 24 years old, Powell was in the main event taking on Mohamed Amine, with many fans and experts expecting Powell to produce a viral finish.
But while Powell did pull off a memorable finish, it was one which some did not expect. Known for his striking, Powell instead showed that he is a dangerous operator on the mat and put Amine to sleep in the dying seconds of round two.
Dan Hardy, PFL Europe Head of Fighter Operations, was impressed by Powell's ability to force the submission.
"He [Simeon Powell] was working really clean strikes; he was looking to find ways around the guard of his opponent," Hardy told The DAZN MMA Show.
"We’ve got big finishers in the light heavyweight division, topped on the card by Simeon Powell who of course is a big finisher with strikes, but then he throws a curveball in there. He finishes with a submission."
Following this performance, Hardy believes the other contenders in PFL Europe's light heavyweight division will find it difficult to find a way to beat Powell in future events.
"All of these light heavyweights on this card have got to look at this guy and think to themselves how do we approach him?
"Do we try and put him on the floor or do we want to deal with him on the floor?
"He’s still young, he’s still undefeated, he’s going to be improving each time we see him out there."
