The trilogy fight was cut short by the unfortunate incident.

Conor McGregor's eagerly-anticipated trilogy fight with Dustin Poirier did not go as he had hoped, or how anyone expected.

The controversial Irish fighter suffered a serious leg injury at the tail end of the first round as he sought revenge on the man who beat him this past January.

While the bout will indeed go down as a Poirier win and means 'The Diamond' is now 2-1 against 'The Notorious', McGregor has already stated his desire for a fourth fight due to the 'doctor's stoppage' nature of the UFC 264 main event, and Poirier seems down to run it back one more time as well.

In a post on Twitter, McGregor confirmed early Monday morning that his surgery is complete and the road to recovery should not be overly long.

"Just out of the surgery room guys!", wrote McGregor.

"Surgery went excellent! Feeling tremendous! Six weeks on crutch and we build back!

"Let's go! God bless."
