After Dricus du Plessis defeated Israel Adesanya via fourth-round submission (rear-naked choke) at UFC 305 over the weekend, Alex Pereira immediately expressed interest in challenging the middleweight world champion.
So what would transpire if Pereira, the UFC light heavyweight world champ and a former middleweight titleholder, fights du Plessis?
Daniel Cormier and Chael Sonnen gave their thoughts on the possible super fight via their "Good Guy/Bad Guy" platform recently.
"The Pereira thing, that would have me going maan," Cormier said. "But DDP already said, Chael, 'it doesn't have to be at 185, I'm not giving you no excuse. I'll come to 205 and fight you.'
"And after watching him [against Adesanya], I don't know that he don't do well against Alex because of his wrestling and his ability to strike."
Sonnen seemed to agree, questioning Pereira's timing of calling du Plessis out.
"Wrong guy to mess with," Sonnen said of du Plessis fresh off the South African fighter defending the middleweight title for the first time.
"In all fairness, whatever Alex is seeing in DDP, Alex should know, that's what we all saw in Alex two years ago," he continued. "We did not understand how great he is."
Sonnen added: "There is something about DDP, how well he competes, how well he and his coach can game plan. Man, the guy's special."
The 30-year-old du Plessis hasn't tasted defeat since making his UFC debut in October 2020, having rattled off eight straight victories.
