Jon Jones is once again at the forefront of conversations throughout the MMA world.
The American made a successful first defence of his UFC heavyweight title this past weekend at UFC 309 where he stopped Stipe Miocic in the third round at the historic Madison Square Garden.
While Jones vs. Miocic was a huge fight, the future of the heavyweight division dominated the build-up with the calls becoming louder for Jones to face interim champion Tom Aspinall if 'Bones' did get the win.
Jones before and during fight week poured cold water on the idea of him stepping into the cage with Aspinall, and instead expressed a desire to face UFC light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira, and while this may be a super fight in its own right, there are a number of obstacles.
One of those is for Pereira who will need to move up in weight, and it is not an easy transition with it taking Jones three years to transform himself into a force at heavyweight after dominating at 205lbs.
Retired UFC star Jorge Masvidal spoke to Sportsbook Review about whether a Jones vs. Pereira fight is feasible and why he does not want Jones to face the Brazilian next.
“It's asking a lot of Pereira to move up to heavyweight," Masvidal said.
"He's just been at 185. Now he's at 205. Now we're asking him to go to heavyweight. How long did it take Jones to go from 205 to heavyweight?
"I don't think it's fair to ask Alex to go up, he'd need more time to develop at a heavyweight before facing Jones. But Aspinall is the fight info I want to see or Ngannou.”
Pereira has been a busy man in 2024, fighting three times and winning all of those contests which has made him a prime candidate for being named the 2024 Fighter of the Year in the UFC.
