The main event has Alexander Volkanovski defending the featherweight title against Chan Sung Jung, also known as "The Korean Zombie". In the co-main event, a rematch for the bantamweight title, champion Aljamain Sterling and Petr Yan meet in a title unification clash.
Volkanovski is coming off his second successful title defense when he dominated Brian Ortega at UFC 266. After that, it appeared he'd be meeting former 145-pound titlist Max Holloway at UFC 272 in a trilogy fight. However, Holloway suffered an injury and couldn't compete. So the UFC shifted course and went with Jung, who has won three of four and is coming off of a decision win over fellow contender Dan Ige in June.
Sterling and Yan fought for 135-pound gold at UFC 259 in March 2021. The fourth round was about to come to a close, and Yan had started to pull away and appeared to be on his way to a victory. But an illegal knee from Yan while Sterling was on the mat, led to Sterling being unable to continue and Yan getting disqualified for an illegal strike. They were scheduled to meet again at UFC 267. But a month before the event, Sterling pulled out due to a lingering neck issue that required surgery. Yan remained on the card and beat Cory Sandhagen by unanimous decision to win the interim title to secure the sequel with Sterling.
