Josef Newgarden earned his redemption at Road America.

After finishing 21st last year despite leading the most laps, Newgarden took the checkered flag with considerable ease at the Sonsio Grand Prix at Road America on Sunday. It was his third win of the season, and it comes with a $1 million bonus as Newgarden became the first IndyCar driver in 2022 to win on an oval, road course and street course.

The victory comes a week after Newgarden started in pole position at the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix and finished in fourth place.

"That's what makes IndyCar so tough, it's impossible to predict what's gonna happen," Newgarden told NBC Sports.

"I thought we had it all locked up in Detriot, like it was going to be easy from the front row and it was anything but easy, it went completely different than we predicted, and that's just what makes this series so difficult and it makes it fun to be in. You've got to be on your toes at all times.

"You can go in with a plan but you probably have to change your plan 90 percent of the time once the race starts to unfold.

"To be able to hit all these disciplines with this team is just — for me it's the best series in the world, I just love driving IndyCar."
