He's a serial over-achiever with a Bachelor of Science degree, a massive business empire, a Heisman Trophy, and specifically, on this day in history he became the first, and to date only ever athlete to be named to all-star games in both Major League Baseball and the NFL.

We’re talking of course about the legendary Bo Jackson. As we mark the day in 1990 when he was named to the AFC Pro Bowl team, let's take a moment to remember the many achievements of Vincent Edward 'Bo' Jackson."

Who Was Bo Jackson?

Vincent Edward ‘Bo’ Jackson, born 30 November 1962, in Bessemer, Alabama, is widely regarded as one of the greatest athletes of all time.

Known for his extraordinary physical abilities and versatility, Bo excelled in multiple sports from a young age. A standout in high school, he went on to win the prestigious Heisman Trophy in 1985 while playing college football for Auburn University.

But his legacy extends far beyond the football field, as he became an icon for his ability to dominate in two major professional sports simultaneously.

Bo Jackson the NFL Star

Bo Jackson was drafted first overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1986 but chose instead to sign with Major League Baseball’s Kansas City Royals.

However, the Los Angeles Raiders drafted him the following year, securing his services as a part-time running back. Jackson quickly made an impact in the NFL, dazzling fans with his blazing speed, immense strength, and ability to break tackles with ease.

One of his most memorable moments came in 1987 when he raced 91 yards for a touchdown against the Seattle Seahawks, cementing his reputation as an unstoppable force.

Despite playing just four NFL seasons (as his MLB career limited his appearances), he was named to the Pro Bowl in 1990, becoming the first player to achieve All-Star honours in both football and baseball.

Bo Jackson the MLB Star

Jackson’s baseball career began in 1986 with the Kansas City Royals. Known for his raw power and athleticism, he quickly became a fan favorite. Bo’s highlight-reel moments included spectacular outfield catches, where he would seemingly defy gravity, and towering home runs that showcased his incredible strength.

In 1989, he earned a spot on the American League All-Star team, where he hit a leadoff home run and was named All-Star Game MVP.

Over eight MLB seasons, Jackson played for the Royals, Chicago White Sox, and California Angels, leaving an indelible mark on the game despite his relatively short career.

The end of his career

Bo Jackson’s career came to an abrupt end in 1991 when he suffered a severe hip injury while playing for the Raiders.

The injury was so devastating that it not only ended his NFL career but also forced him to retire from baseball after just a few more seasons. Despite the setback, his resilience and determination to recover added to his legend.

Bo Jackson in popular culture

Bo Jackson’s fame extended beyond sports, thanks to the iconic “Bo Knows” Nike campaign that showcased his versatility and cultural relevance.

He appeared in video games like Tecmo Bowl, where his virtual persona was just as dominant as his real-life counterpart.

He made appearances in shows like ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ and ‘Married... with Children’ and Ini Kamoze referenced him in his 1994 smash single ‘Here Comes the Hotstepper’ as his influence on sports and pop culture made him a household name during the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Bo Jackson in business

After retiring, Bo Jackson transitioned into a successful business career.

He owns several businesses, including a sports facility in Illinois and a food company. He’s also been involved in various philanthropic efforts, using his platform to give back to the community.
