Tottenham Hotspur earned a massive three points on Sunday as they defeated Aston Villa 4-0 in a showdown of Champions League hopefuls.

The result sees Spurs close the gap on Villa in the race for fourth place in the Premier League, and after a scoreless first half the North Londoners blew the doors open to secure the victory.

Goals in quick succession by James Maddison and Brennan Johnson inside the first 10 minutes of the second half put the match out of reach, and stoppage-time strikes by Son Heung-min and Timo Werner completed the rout as Tottenham pulled to within two points of the Villains with a game in hand.

For Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou, it was only a matter of time until his side got what they deserved.

"We just needed to stay calm, play our football," Postecoglou told Sky Sports. "We just had to continue to do that and we got our rewards in the second half."

Postecoglou pointed to Spurs' movement throughout the match as something that Villa couldn't deal with, leading to the floodgates eventually opening.

"I think we made it tough for Aston Villa, they worked hard just to contain us," he said. "Last 10 minutes of the second half you could already see them starting to tire a little bit."
