The Bundesliga's season-opening weekend continues as Borussia Dortmund and Köln square off Saturday.
Dortmund narrowly missed out on breaking Bayern Munich's stranglehold of the Bundesliga title last season as they accrued 71 points, identical to Bayern's haul. However, the Bavarians owned the tiebreaker, and the Black & Yellow were left to wonder what might have been.
Ahead of this season, Dortmund sent Jude Bellingham to Real Madrid for a whopping €103 million, giving them the financial flexibility to go after several targets in the transfer market. However, of their three new acquisitions only two required a fee, with Felix Nmecha and Marcel Sabitzer's combined cost less than €50 million.
Will it be enough to unseat Bayern from the throne? Time will tell, but Dortmund start the campaign against a visiting Köln side looking to improve upon last year's 11th place finish. The Billy Goats have been frugal through the offseason, relying mostly on free agents to fill their squad ahead of what they hope will be campaign that ends with a top 10 spot.
