Manchester United hope to finish in the top eight of the Europa League's league phase in order to skip the play-offs and advance directly to the round of 16, and on Thursday they took a big step towards that goal with a dramatic 2-1 victory over visiting Rangers at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils appeared to squander a late lead when Cyriel Dessers scored an 88th-minute equaliser for Rangers, but United captain Bruno Fernandes struck in stoppage time to power his side to all three points.
The victory was the club's fourth straight in the Europa League, and it propels United into fourth place in the standings with just one match left to play in the round.
For Fernandes, the win came at just the right time for his side, who came off a two-goal Premier League loss over the weekend to Brighton that dropped the Red Devils to 13th in the domestic league's standings.
"I know how much it means for the fans to win games," Fernandes told TNT Sports. "You really want to win games.
"We are a little bit frustrated because we started the year well here with two great games against Liverpool and Arsenal then Southampton we had good resilience but didn't play good football. We had the game with Brighton which didn't go for us."
As the hero of Thursday's match, Fernandes urged his team to remained focused on the final Europa League matchday next week, when they can confirm their place in the last-16 with a victory at Romanian outfit FCSB.
"We want to get through the Europa League and get to the final in Bilbao," he said. "We want to get top eight so we don't have to play two more games."
