Can Mauricio Pochettino lead Chelsea to the Champions League places? Marcel Desailly sends warning to fans

Can Mauricio Pochettino lead Chelsea to the Champions League places? Marcel Desailly sends warning to fansDAZN
The 2022/23 season was one to forget for Chelsea.

Chelsea fans will be hoping for a more stable season this time around after a chaotic and underwhelming 2022/23 campaign.

The club's mixed performances on the pitch took place amongst a backrop of a change in ownership, frequent managerial changes, and mass amounts of spending in both the summer and January transfer windows.

With the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino as manager in July, it looks like this is the start of a project for Chelsea which will eventually bring silverware back to Stamford Bridge.

While an immediate return to the Champions League will be the priority for many of those associated with Chelsea, former captain Marcel Desailly has warned fans that they will need to be patient with the team and new manager.

"The people who are invested in Chelsea know that this is a medium to long-term process before they can come back to top-four," Desailly said.

"It is a two to three year project before getting back into the system. You need to build the players and increase their value, get them up to speed with the project.

"I want Chelsea to finish top-four because I am a fan, but I don’t think it will happen when you look at their rivals right now. Chelsea are a team that need to build up again that winning mentality.

"I don’t mind about how much they spent because they know what they’re doing when you look at the length of the investment. I don’t think they will do it this season."

Last season's Premier League campaign saw Chelsea finish 12th and miss out on a Champions League spot for the first time since the 2018/19 season.
