Canada find themselves in strangely familiar territory as they prepare to face Cuba on Tuesday for both teams' final match of the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup group stage.
The Canadians are in third place after a pair of draws against Guadeloupe and Guatemala, and now they need a win to ensure advancement into the knockout stages. It's a scenario reminiscent of many previous Gold Cups, before the likes of Alphonso Davies and Jonathan David burst onto the scene and helped carry the side to the top of the regional ladder.
Without Davies, David and many other European-based players for this tournament, Canada have looked like the team from tournaments past that struggled to score regardless of the opponent.
The saving grace for this Canada side is that their final group opponent is a Cuba team that have lost both of their previous games and have clearly demonstrated themselves to be the weakest link of Group D. As is usual with Cuban national teams when they travel to the United States, this edition has also lost some players to defection, further weakening an already poor side.
As such, the Canadians have little excuse to not win this match by multiple goals.
