Chelsea kick off their Premier League against Manchester City on Sunday week and once again head into a new campaign under new management.
After sacking Mauricio Pochettino at the culmination of last season, former assistant to Pep Guardiola Enzo Maresca has been appointed the club's new boss following his success in leading Leicester to the Championship title.
The dismissal of Pochettino raised some eyebrows, after the Argentine led the Blues back into Europe and look to be making progress with the club's bloated squad. So much so, that former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton is still puzzled the club decided to make the change and part ways with the former Spurs coach.
“I find Chelsea baffling at the moment,” he told Best Online Poker Sites.
“I couldn’t get my head around the Pochettino departure in particular and I’m still scratching my head over it. He arrived in a situation where the club was in a real mess with a top-heavy squad – they were having to build extra dressing rooms to fit in all the players and had a difficult start to the season, but they finished really strongly. Of course, finishing sixth wasn’t the aim at the start of the season, but there were small steps and progress made.
“Have they got a better manager in Enzo Maresca? I’m not sure, time will tell. He did a good job at Leicester but wasn’t actually loved by some sections of the support, which I found pretty odd. He’s got a massive job on his hands now with the expectations of the club and the owners, and it’s going to be difficult for him.
“We know that Todd Boehly has brought in loads of young players for big money and hoping that they develop, but are Chelsea a team currently? I’m not so sure that they are.”
