The England icon has heaped praise on the midfielder.

Former England international Chris Waddle says former Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka is in consideration for the best player at Euro 2024 so far.

Xhaka has helped lead his team to the quarter-finals of the competition, where they will face pre-tournament favourites England.

The 31-year-old, who now plays for Bayer Leverkusen, spent seven seasons with the Gunners, and has been deemed fit enough to play against Gareth Southgate's side despite suffering with an adductor injury.

Speaking to Lord Ping, Waddle also highlighted a trio of Spanish players who have caught his eye.

"I never thought I’d say this, but Granit Xhaka has to be in there. I’ve been impressed by him and the way that he's played for Switzerland," said Waddle.

"Fabian Ruiz, Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams have also impressed me for Spain.

"Nico Williams is someone that you would pay to watch. He has unbelievable talent. He is willing to take anyone on. He takes risks with the ball and he’s brave – if he loses it, he loses it, that’s what he’s in the team for and he knows that he has a guy like Rodri behind him. He’s such a positive player.

"I’m waiting for Rafael Leão to come to the party for Portugal. It hasn’t happened for him yet, but the big players tend to produce moments that matter when the games start to carry extra pressure.

"I’m sure it will only be a matter of time for him because he is someone that I love to watch."
