The football world has given an outpouring of support for Tom Lockyer after the Luton Town captain collapsed on the pitch in a match against AFC Bournemouth on Saturday.

It was later confirmed that Lockyer had suffered a cardiac arrest during the match. That follows an on-field collapse by the Wales international in May, after which he underwent heart surgery.

The 29-year-old now awaits the results of tests he underwent over the weekend to determine the next steps in his recovery.

Another Premier League player who went through a similar situation has joined the growing list of well-wishers, as Christian Eriksen advised Lockyer to put his well-being above all else.

Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark's opening group stage match at Euro 2020 and received life-saving on-field treatment before being stretchered off the pitch. The midfielder, currently with Manchester United, was later fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator and only returned to the pitch after more than eight months of recovery.

The Dane encouraged Lockyer to be patient in order to make the best decision for himself and his loved ones.

“Well first of all, I hope he’s okay," Eriksen told Betfred. "I’ve read and seen what’s happened and I hope he’s okay, takes his time, is in a healthy way and his family are there to support him. I cross my fingers that he’s fine.

“My advice to him would be to make the best decision you can. If the doctors tell you to do something else then you’ve got to respect it and see what you can do. There’s nothing that’s going to hold you back, but in the end it all depends on how he’s feeling and what the doctors are saying. He has to make the decision with his family, but he should take his time and focus on himself.”
