The biggest question hanging over Thomas Tuchel's impending takeover as England head coach is whether the English public will accept a German in the role, says Dietmar "Didi" Hamann.

Tuchel was announced this week as the Three Lions' new boss, with the former Chelsea, PSG and Bayern Munich manager set to take the reins on Jan. 1. His contract will take him through to the end of the 2026 World Cup, set to take place throughout North America, but Hamann believes the public opinion of the 51-year-old could come much sooner than that.

Speaking to wettbasis.com, former Liverpool star Hamann pondered whether the fan base would accept Tuchel, who will become England's third foreign head coach after Sven Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.

"The only question will be how the public feels about a German coaching England," Hamann said. "I know that the English are very fair sportsmen, but whether they will accept a German as national coach - even if it is Thomas Tuchel, who, as mentioned, has a very, very high status - is not to be underestimated. I am now excited to see how this develops."

"I was a bit surprised because when this came up a few months ago, some well-known people came forward and said that a German cannot coach England. In principle, I could imagine it, but I'm not English."
