Emmanuel Petit offers theory on why Arsenal are squandering Premier League title lead

Emmanuel Petit offers theory on why Arsenal are squandering Premier League title leadDAZN

Emmanuel Petit is one of the greatest players to wear the Arsenal shirt, but it had pained the former French midfield maestro to see the team get reeled in by Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table in recent weeks.

Petit was part of the 1998 league-winning squad, and the 52-year-old was still active in the league (at Chelsea) when Arsene Wenger's side famously did so without losing a single game all campaign long back in 2004.

That was the last time Arsenal tasted league success, and what seemed to be a serious opportunity to break the duck has been dented by successive two-goal leads blown in draws vs. Liverpool and West Ham.

When asked by Legal Sports Books for his professional insight on why an eight-point lead over defending titleholders City could soon become just a one-point advantage if Pep Guardiola's men win their game in hand, Petit had a theory.

“Maybe the fear of losing everything could be the reason (Arsenal throw away leads)," said Petit.

"They have no experience in these situations as a team. When you look at Manchester City, they’re used to winning trophies over the last few years, so they have the experience and they can handle their emotions well.

"When you look at both games, they were leading 2-0 and playing very well but all of a sudden, they stopped playing and then their opponent came back into the game.

"Once they scored and put the pressure on then you didn’t recognise the Arsenal you saw on the pitch anymore."

A win over City on Wednesday April 26th at the Etihad could swing the pendulum back in the London club's favour. All the info you need on how to watch that huge potential title-decider can be found here.

Arsenal are also chasing glory in the UEFA Women's Champions League, and begin their two-legged semi-final against Wolfsburg in Germany on Sunday April 23rd. You can watch both games live on DAZN's official YouTube channel.
