Emmanuel Petit believes big things are ahead for Manchester United duo Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho, but the Kopa Trophy is not among them this year.
The Kopa Trophy is given to the best performing player under the age of 21, as judged by France Football, in the same ceremony as the Ballon d'Or. Garnacho and Mainoo are on the 10-player list of finalists for the award after both starred for club and country over the past year, but Petit doesn't think either have done enough to supplant his favourite to claim the prize.
"Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho are two great young prospects," Petit told topoffshoresportsbooks.com.
"These are the players that have been putting in the best performances for Manchester United, outshining their senior colleagues.
"I like the players, but they have no chance of winning this trophy. They can forget all about it. Lamine Yamal is the one. Oh my, what a player. He has had an amazing year, and he had an outstanding international tournament for Spain. I was blown away by his maturity at the competition. The way that he took responsibility, the way that he played, he was sensational.
"If Yamal is on the list, there can only be one winner. I’m sorry guys, but you have no chance."
