Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jamie O'Hara has called for his old club to bolster their squad in January. Tottenham started their 2023-24 Premier League campaign in fine form under new manager Ange Postecoglou.
However, a rash of injuries have halted Spurs' momentum. Following Thursday's loss to West Ham United, Tottenham have lost five consecutive league games.
Speaking to Grosvenor Sport, O'Hara said, "The squad really needs strengthening,” he said. “I think their first XI, when fit, is a really good XI, but I think another defender and a centre-midfielder would be a big bonus."
O'Hara specifically pinpointed the central defenders as an area of improvement. Micky Van de Ven's injury has exposed Tottenham's depth in that position. O'Hara said, "Central defence is probably a bigger issue – Christian Romero misses 30-40% of his games with the number of times he gets sent off!"
"Micky van de Ven has been absolutely fantastic, but the backup to him and Romero simply aren’t good enough."
"I think the team need centre-halves if they’re going to finish in the top four. Spurs don’t have a squad – it’s as simple as that. If they lose their best players to injury or suspension, the players who come in aren’t good enough."
