Former Arsenal captain William Gallas believes the side will fall short becoming Premier League champions again this season.

Arsenal led the league for most of the previous campaign, but their challenge fell away in the last few months, and Manchester City were able to take advantage, lifting the trophy once more under Pep Guardiola.

Manager Mikel Arteta has been active in the transfer market, and is chasing David Raya, Brentford’s Spanish international goalkeeper.

They have already signed Kai Havertz, another in a long list of recent transfers from London rivals Chelsea, as well as Jurrien Timber from Ajax. Declan Rice also arrived after lengthy negotiations with fellow Premier League side West Ham.

However, City continue to spend heavily after they achieved the treble last season, and third-placed Manchester United have brought in Andre Onana, Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund.

Chelsea are adding several new players under manager Antonio Conte, and Newcastle United will hope to improve upon their impressive efforts under Eddie Howe last season

Speaking to Gambling Zone, Gallas - who also played for Chelsea and Tottenham, amongst others - thinks Arteta’s men do not have the character to win the league.

He said: “I’m sure Arsenal will get very close to winning the title this season, but I don’t think they [will] be crowned champions in May.

“I think Arsenal are missing the character and the personality to become champions – these are the qualities that they needed to show at the end of last season, and they couldn’t.”
