Former Chelsea player calls club 'a disgrace' amid another summer of big spending

Former Chelsea player calls club 'a disgrace' amid another summer of big spendingDAZN

Chelsea are once again very active on the transfer market this summer, having already acquired seven new players before the end of July.

Most of the transfers have involved players 22 years old or younger, and while there hasn't been a high-figure transaction in the vein of Moises Caicedo's £100 million purchase last summer, Chelsea's continued activity in the market suggests that they have not yet settled on their squad despite bringing in nearly 20 players over the past year.

For Frank Leboeuf, the club's penchant for buying so many younger players will not bode well, as he feels the lack of experience in the side will prove fatal regardless of how many highly touted youngers they sign.

"Some fans think Chelsea can just start from scratch next season, but it won’t really be starting from scratch after spending a billion pounds," the retired Chelsea star told Instant Casino.

"The club can do whatever they want with their money but as a former player, I think it's kind of a disgrace to see what we are seeing.

"The talent is there in the squad but you don’t have many leaders or players you can rely on, that’s the biggest problem [manager Enzo] Maresca has."

Leboeuf added that he feels the Blues won't claim another league title until they change their transfer strategy, leaving the London side to compete for cups at best.

"It’s possible that Chelsea can win a cup, like the FA Cup this season potentially, but never the Premier League. No way," he said.

"If they keep going the way they’re going then they will never win a Premier League title again, they need experience. It just won’t work.

"When I arrived at the club they had been waiting 26 years for a trophy and that only came to an end when players experienced winners arrived."
