Gareth Southgate has led England through several tournaments, serving as manager for two World Cups, a European Championship and three UEFA Nations Leagues so far.
Southgate is now preparing for this summer's Euro 2024, in which the Three Lions will be considered among the favourites.
While England have shown growth throughout Southgate's tenure — which started as a caretaker appointment in 2016 — a former striker who played for the Three Lions thinks that the 53-year-old's time as manager should come to a close after Euro 2024.
Speaking on Lord Ping: Red or Black, Darren Bent laid out the reasoning behind his belief that Southgate should step aside after this summer's tournament — win or lose.
"I think it should be Gareth Southgate's last tournament," Bent said. "What he has done has been fantastic in uniting the nation and made people believe in the England team again.
"It will be a different discussion if England win it, but even then it might be time for a fresher face with better ideas because you can't let this generation go to waste. I think regardless, this should be his last tournament."
Bent's hesitancy about Southgate's future usefulness as England manager is informed, at least partially, by the team's performance in the Euro 2020 final, which was played in London and won by Italy.
"England can go all the way, them or France. England have got the best squad in the [2024] tournament," he said.
"My only concern would be the manager. Southgate has done great things to get England to a World Cup semi-final and a Euros final, but, I believe other managers will have got the team over the line - especially the [2020] Euros final at Wembley when they went one-up so early. That's the one that drains on people.
"England had all that time to go on and win the game and they didn't do it."
