Aidan McGeady believes Lee Carsley could become the new England manager on a permanent basis.

Carsley is set to step in from the under-21 setup in order to replace Gareth Southgate for the upcoming Nations League games.

Southgate stepped away from the role after the end of Euro 2024 and is yet to take up a new job.

Carsley has relatively little experience, but Southgate was not highly regarded when he took over the job in similar circumstances, and is one of the best England managers in recent history.

McGeady thinks that England may end up repeating their decision.

Speaking to BoyleSports, who offer the latest Premier League odds , McGeady said: “Lee Carsley can follow in the footsteps of Gareth Southgate, being promoted from the under 21s which is a well trodden path.

“To be totally honest, the top managers, the best managers in the world are in club football currently. So you do have to take a different path.

“You need to change your landscape a little bit to try and get success with international football. Unless it's a slightly older coach, most of the younger managers and head coaches are currently in club football.”
