Joël Matip ruptured his ACL in Liverpool's 4-3 win over Fulham last week, and one of the club's former players thinks the 32-year-old will not suit up again for the Reds.

The club confimed the severity of the injury this week, with manager Jurgen Klopp calling the ailment "very unfortunate."

Mark Lawrenson, who played for Liverpool for much of the 1980s, believes the injury was enough to end Matip's stellar seven-year run at Anfield.

Lawrenson was speaking to Paddy Power when he made the grim prediction.

“We won’t see Joël Matip play another game for Liverpool, and they shouldn’t extend his contract," Lawrenson said.

"Because of his age, it’s a long injury and I don’t know whether they tried to extend his contract before he got injured or not.

"I probably think he wouldn’t have wanted his contract to be extended because he’ll have wanted to have a look around come the end of the season and see what other teams he could go to.

“It’s really unfortunate for him, but you can see it from the club’s point of view. I don’t see him playing another game for Liverpool.”
