He backed Gareth Southgate's chances.

Former Liverpool manager Graeme Souness has picked England as his favourites for the upcoming Euro 2024 tournament.

England are one of the pre-competition favourites ahead of the tournament in Germany this summer, and Gareth Southgate is able to call upon players such as Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and Cole Palmer.

While there are some questions over how the manager will manage to combine the front six into an effective and cohesive whole, there is no doubt there is an exceptional amount of talent to put to work.

Souness, who was one of Scotland’s finest players, told William Hill that he fancied England to go on to win it.

He said: “I think England are favourites. Germany, Spain and Italy all aren’t as strong as they once were,.

“When it comes to France, England were better than them in the World Cup quarter-final in the second half. They went a goal down and took them on, after which they were the better team. I think the stars have aligned for England this summer.

“Experience in winning tournaments doesn’t matter. If you’re a top player, you go into every game thinking you can win it. These players are winning games every week at club level, they’re winners. They don’t put the England shirt on and feel different because they’ve never won a tournament in it.”
