Liverpool have reported interest in the Newcastle man.

Anthony Gordon may end up staying at Newcastle United after Liverpool reportedly spent much of the summer pursuing a transfer for the 23-year-old, but Mark Lawrenson isn't sure how real the links were.

Gordon is coming off a strong Premier League season in which he scored 11 times for the Magpies, which led to his first international caps for England. The winger's increased productivity boosted his stock, but former Liverpool defender Lawrenson noted that Gordon may not even be a guaranteed starter for the Reds should a deal be struck.

“If Anthony Gordon came to Liverpool, he might possibly start ahead of Luis Díaz but he had his own problems last year off the pitch, but he finished the season really strongly," Lawrenson told Paddy Power

"I just wonder whether the Anthony Gordon links are because Newcastle needed to let a few players go but I think that [the rumours] were a bit of a red herring. I didn’t really get that to be honest with you.”
