Former Manchester United player Robbie Savage does not think David de Gea should definitely come back to Old Trafford.
Savage was talking to Planet Sport Bet, and while he made his name at Leicester City, he was a United youngster before being let go by Alex Ferguson.
At United this season they have seen new goalkeeping signing Andre Onana struggle for consistency, and while things have improved a little in recent weeks, the former Inter Man made another mistake in the 3-3 draw at Galatasaray on Wednesday.
De Gea left the club when his contract expired in the summer but he has yet to find a new club, and rumours have persisted that the Spaniard could be brought back to cover Onana’s absence at the African Cup of Nations.
However, Savage is not sure that re-signing him is the best idea, explaining: “Onana is better at playing out from the back, he looks calm and composed doing that, but fundamentally in the big moments, would United have been better off keeping De Gea? I think so. I do think they now need to stick with Onana for at least this season. However, if his poor form continues then they should look to replace him with a goalkeeper who can play out, but can also be a better all-round keeper.
“De Gea was really good at keeping the ball out of the back of the net. In his last season he might have made a few mistakes, but he still won four Player of the Season awards at United and the Golden Glove last season!
“It’s not all about Onana because as a collective, Manchester United have been all over the place at times. However, people are now starting to ask whether they should re-sign De Gea. I’m not sure that should be the case, because he doesn’t fit Erik ten Hag’s style of playing out from the back.”
