Former Manchester United and Leeds midfielder Gordon Strachan compared Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham side to Barcelona and Manchester City.
Strachan managed Scotland, Celtic, Middlesbrough and others over a long career, and speaking to Gambling Zone, he explained he had been impressed by the North London team.
The team currently sit second below Pep Guardiola’s City side, who maintain a 100% record.
Tottenham are undefeated in the league’s opening four games, winning three and drawing the other, and Strachan credits new signing James Maddison and the reinvigorated Yves Bissouma for their improvement under the Australian.
Postecoglou arrived from Strachan’s old side Celtic in the summer as a replacement for Antonio Conte, and has had to contend with the departure of Harry Kane to Bayern Munich.
Explaining the comparison to Barcelona and City, perhaps the best two teams of the last two decades, he said: “Tottenham are breaking teams down in the middle of the park, which is really hard to do.
“When you think about the best teams from the last twenty years: the great Barcelona sides with Xavi and Iniesta, City with De Bruyne and Gundogan, that’s what they do.
“Tottenham are doing that now because of the impact of Bissouma and Maddison.”
